The press and populace is abuzz with talk about our nation might meet President Obama’s goals to have more college graduates than any other country by the year 2020. One such option is moving toward truncated summer breaks, longer school years, and more hours of instruction given at school each day.
Those these may indeed increase our nation’s college graduates, is this the best thing for our country? How many college graduates now work in occupations which do require a college degree? A lot, it seems. And what about high school students whose time to work at part-time jobs to pay bills, food costs, student auto loans, or other needs? How will these kids fair with fewer hours during summer or after school to work?
